Asia Regional Risk Watch: data-driven scenario tracking

Status:In preparationPeriod:2026–2027Partners:Regional research institutions and data partners (list to be announced)

Project background

Demand for professional assessment of regional risk in Asia keeps rising, yet open, transparent and methodologically verifiable risk-watching tools remain scarce. Most assessments rely on expert impressions, with inconsistent indicator definitions that are hard to compare or trace. This project seeks to fill that gap by tracking regional dynamics in a structured and publicly checkable way.

Methodological framework

  • Domains: security, politics, economy and governance as four observation domains, with risk signals and data sources defined topic by topic.
  • Indicator design: publicly verifiable objective indicators take priority, complemented by clearly labelled expert judgement to avoid conflating the two.
  • Tracking: indicators are updated regularly, recording direction and magnitude of change to form a traceable time series.
  • Open verification: methods and data sources are public, open to peer review and criticism, with periodic revision of the framework.

Expected outputs

  • An annual Asia Regional Risk Watch report offering a structured assessment of the overall situation and key topics.
  • Open datasets and indicator notes for researchers to download, cite and re-analyse.
  • Thematic briefs providing rapid assessment of emerging issues, clearly separating facts, analysis and speculation.

Current status

The project is in preparation. A first version of the indicator framework and methodology note will be released for consultation, and regional research peers are welcome to join the review. The official launch and data release dates will be announced separately.
