About this resource

Wikidata is an open knowledge base operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, organising human knowledge as structured data (entities, properties and relationships). Structured data in its main namespaces is contributed to the public domain (CC0), so anyone may use, integrate and redistribute it without individual permission.

Content and features

  • Data model: items (entities), properties and statements, covering people, organisations, places, events and scholarly literature.
  • Querying: a SPARQL endpoint supporting complex relationship queries and aggregation.
  • Wikipedia integration: infobox data in many language editions of Wikipedia comes from Wikidata and updates in step.

Licence and use

  • Structured data: items, properties and lexemes are contributed to the public domain under CC0 and may be used freely.
  • Text content: text in other namespaces is licensed under CC BY-SA.
  • Access: bulk dumps, API and SPARQL endpoint.

Notes for researchers

Wikidata is a collaboratively maintained source of uneven quality: popular entities are usually reviewed repeatedly, while obscure entries may be missing or out of date. For formal research, keep a snapshot of the query time, record the query and data version, and cross-check against authoritative primary sources wherever possible.

Sources and version: this entry is a resource index pointing to a third-party open knowledge base; structured data are contributed to the public domain under CC0, text rights belong to contributors and Wikimedia, and licence terms follow the latest terms of the source site.
